Groups of LGBT men and women in thirteen US States and five countries abroad have turned their fantasy selves into a dedicated social service community, aiding not only those afflicted with HIV but poor, homeless and other outcasts of today’s world. Photographer Black has created a gallery of double portraits of many of these remarkable people, as well as photographing their activities and public calls for understanding and recognition.

The streets of the two cities have formed the backdrop and subject for countless mystery and detective novels. Garber has photographed key places in both cities at night and matched the images with squibs from the great writers—from Dashiell Hammett and Ray Bradbury to Mickey Spillane and Walter Moseley.
